Thanks to Alice I was recently inspired to make some Totoro nails! She posted the cutest Totoro manicure and as soon as I saw it I knew I had to try it out for myself.

The cute Totoro face is Alice's design. The second is a chibi white Totoro, (they are much smaller than regular Totoro.) The third are "Makkuro Kurosuke" and they are sort of like Japanese dust bunnies.

As always, I used acrylic craft paint to make these designs. I attached a gemstone to Totoro's leaf-hat for a little sparkle. The grey polish I used is Diamond Cosmetics "Concrete Jungle."

The green I used for this one is OPI's "Jade is the New Black." I love this polish, it's such a gorgeous color!

These little guys are my favorite of the three designs. I used black acrylic craft paint and dotted the tip of my brush around the edges to make them look suitably fluffy. You can never catch a Makkuro Kurosuke because if you try, you will squish it and find only soot in your hands.

For all three of these Totoro designs I used acrylic paint from Born Pretty nail art store. The box set pictured comes with 14 colors; I used the dark green, white and black for my Totoro nails. This was my first time using these paints so I'm still testing them out.

The gemstones I used to add a little sparkle are also from the same nail art store. I used the dark green and light green gemstones you can see in the wheel.
Thank you very much to Born Pretty for providing me with the products I used to create these nails. (They were a lot of fun to make and I would have put them on my own hands but Alfredo-husband and I are celebrating our five year marriagaversary tomorrow, (Nov. 1st) so I'll be saving this particular design for later. We're going out for dinner so Totoro won't really go with my outfit, haha!)
Have you seen the film "Tonari no Totoro" (My Neighbor Totoro) before?
Asami is 23 and lives in Pennsylvania with her husband and cat. She enjoys painting watercolors, LOST, coffee and semicolons.

This was the first Ghibli movie I saw, awww these are gorgrous!
Omg, so, so cute~ I'm not familiar with Totoro yet, but definitely want to see it. And happy marriagaversary! :)

Never even heard of Totore before but it's clearly something totally adorable! Love the colours because they're so pretty but understated and the little gems are awesome :)
Wow Asami, I'm so flattered that my manicure inspired you to do your own! You did a much better job than me! :)
It's so cuteeeee!!!!! Thanks for the link and for mentioning me. I'm so flattered and honored. :)
Love these designs. I love Makkuro Kurosuke, Hayao Miyazaki is a genius but Spirited Away is my favorite of his work.
Btw, hope you and your hubby have a great anniversary. :D
♪tonari no to-toro totooooro...
I watched that movie nonstop as a child, with subtitles because my dad thought it might teach us Japanese. It didn't work, unfortunately, haha!
Adorable nails, and happy marriagaversary!
I LOVE Totoro! When I was very little we had the Chinese dubbed version and I loved it. Come to think of it, I don't think I have seen the English version before O_O and don't really know what it is about XD But I love it all the same!
Your nails are super cute! I need more nail polish so I can do cute looks like this!

I love these ideas! Totoro is so cute, I saw the film some time ago. I only vaguely remember what it was about, but I remember Totoro! :)
Wow it's so cute! I really like all of Miyazakis movies I've seen so far, but Totoro is the by far cutest!
Count me in as another Totoro fan. I'm going to have to try this mani (but I'm nervous about my painting skills). My girls will love it.
I just bought these acrylics! Thanks for the heads-up on them!
Your nail designs are always so kawaii!!!
Amazingly cute! :D You are so skilled :D
Happy anniversary! And I looove the nail designs, so pretty!
hey asami, I got my hands on acrylic paint today =) I also ordered the 14 piece set from bornpretty store =) do you know a good tutorial about acrylic nail painting 101? =) For example I don't know if I should dilute the paint with water, it feels so thick!
Suuuuuper cute! :))) xx
This is incredible!! I need to try this, and the Pokemon one as well.
Can I request that you do all nail art on your actual nails because they look so much more awesome on you than on the plastic nails.
The Totoro colour scheme is better than the Pokemon one.
poppynails, thank you! Posting exclusively on my own nails though, I can't, sorry. It would mean half the amount of designs. This one, for instance, I couldn't apply to my own nails because of dinner plans and I'd rather show it on these demo nails than not show it at all.
Sometimes making three or four nails sounds like fun but having to remove what I might not be done wearing and do a full ten, well, I probably just wouldn't. And because I like to wear something for three or four days, if I post on my own hands exclusively it would mean two posts a week at the most. I'm really glad to hear you like seeing the looks but I just can't make that change right now and I hope you'll understand. Thank you for asking though and I do agree that this color scheme is much better than the Pokemon one.
Thank you, everyone! It makes me so happy to hear that you all love Totoro! I really appreciate the comments I get; it's the reason I blog and they bring me a lot of joy to read. I'll be posting some new Pokemon designs soon. Thank you for taking the time to say hi. :-)
OMG! This is I think the cutest I have ever seen! So Detailled, its wonderful!

What a cute nailart
Cute and beautiful nail art. I was wondering if you could tell me which acrylic box set you have: the blue or the pink? (although they appear to be the same on their website description). Thanks.
Those are so adorable!! Do you have any tips for using acrylic paint on nails? I apply it with nail brushes but sometimes it gets bumpy in texture...
JNGMD, I have the blue box myself but I just got these paints very recently and I've only used them once so I feel like I'm still testing them out. Do you have a Michael's near you?
bee-irreplaceable, just like with nail polish, several layers of acrylic paint can definitely become textured or raised. A full layer of topcoat should smooth it out but sometimes two coats of topcoat can be even better. If you feel like your paint itself is thick and bumpy, thin it out before use with a bit of water and it should go on smoother. Fortunately acrylic paint is really easy to thin! I hope that helps, let me know if it's still turning out bumpy.
They're so cuuuuute <3
Thanks so much for your great review, and your design is so cute, I love it!
really creative and gorgeous :)
